As a leader in the LED packaging industry, Lumileds is committed to innovation breakthroughs and market development. In 2018, in the context of the overall slowdown in the LED general lighting industry and the Sino-US trade war, how does Lumileds view the future development space and direction of the lighting market? What kind of layout and planning is there in the Chinese market? During the just-concluded 2018 Hong Kong Autumn Lighting Fair, LEDinside had the opportunity to interview Lumileds SVP Steve Barlow and Asia Pacific Vice President Mr. Xie Wenfeng, asking them to share their views and forecasts on the industry.
Human factors/interconnected lighting is the future trend, and the added value of products is more valued.
Speaking of the future general lighting market trends, Mr. Steve Barlow believes that with the development of lighting technology and the upgrading of consumer demand, human-induced lighting is bound to be the key development direction in the future. Dimmable, color-adjustable, and even custom-made lighting products can help manufacturers increase production capacity, and are more in line with the "people-oriented" lighting development philosophy. At the same time, the rise of networked lighting combined with smart interconnect technology has also allowed manufacturers to focus more on R&D on software systems. And manufacturers like Lumileds with light engine design and manufacturing capabilities will certainly be better able to help downstream lighting customers achieve product development in the future.
In the case that the general lighting market is becoming mature and the demand is slowing down, improving the added value of products, improving the reliability, color, and light efficiency of the products is the development focus for the manufacturers. Lumileds will continue to improve InGaN and AlInGaP material systems for high-end retail, gardening, construction, entertainment and stadium/outdoor lighting. For example, Lumileds' new LUXEON 2835HE LED series has a luminous efficacy of >200 lm/W and a tight color point for excellent color consistency.
Focus on technological innovation and maintain patent leadership
Mr. Steve Barlow said that in the increasingly competitive situation of the LED industry, focusing on product innovation and patent layout is the focus of Lumileds' leadership. Mr. Xie Wenfeng also said that in the fields of phosphor, epitaxy, packaging, etc., the company is continuing to develop new technologies and patents. For example, Lumileds upgraded COB product performance this year, and the new fourth-generation CoB Core Range achieves both high color rendering index and high light efficiency, thanks in large part to Lumileds' own phosphor development and engineering.
In addition, the minimization of glare is also the mainstream technology trend of current lamps. Reducing glare means more lighting solutions with light guides. Lumileds' Matrix Platform patented light guides use a new generation of integrated light guide technology to provide non-pixel lighting with good visual comfort and a custom light distribution pattern for indoor and outdoor luminaire designs to meet specific Application requirements. These integrated light guides can also be combined with other Matrix Platform advanced technologies such as integrated drive technology to provide a unique light engine solution that accelerates time-to-market for luminaires and helps manufacturers reduce inventory.
Optimistic about China's industrial base, trade war will not affect development strategy
For the development of China's LED lighting industry, Mr. Steve Barlow believes that China's LED industry has sufficient capacity, so Lumileds' investment is more focused on technology research and product innovation, and in the production part, it cooperates with local partners to make full use of local resources. The Sino-US trade war has indeed had a certain negative impact on the LED industry in the near future. It has also been observed that downstream lighting customers are affected by trade wars, and the decline in exports has indirectly led to a slowdown in demand.
Nevertheless, Lumileds believes that China's industrial base should be sufficient to overcome the negative impact of the trade war, so the company's development strategy in China, including production base and layout, will not be adjusted due to trade wars. At the same time, the company will try its best to help Chinese lighting manufacturers overcome difficulties and jointly achieve healthy and stable development of the industry.
