It has direct sterilization and disinfection capabilities. It is mainly used in water and air purification, sterilization, and biological detection.
Li Jinmin, director of the State Key Laboratory of Semiconductor Lighting Joint Innovation, said that most of the deep ultraviolet light sources used in disinfection and sterilization in civil and industrial fields are mercury lamps. Due to the impact of mercury on human society and the environment, starting this year, the International Minamata Convention, which restricts the use and release of mercury, has officially entered into force. Traditional mercury lamps will be restricted, prohibited from production and use, and gradually withdrawn from the market. The development of a new type of environmentally friendly and efficient UV light source has become an important challenge facing people.
"Deep UV LEDs based on the third generation of GaN semiconductor materials have become the only choice for this new application. Li Jinmin said that if deep UV LEDs are to replace mercury lamps, it means that in the next decade, the deep UV industry will develop into a new trillion-dollar industry like LED lighting.
But challenges and opportunities exist. Deep UV LED is a technology that was only invented at the beginning of this century. It is still in the initial stage of product introduction, and its radiation power, radiation efficiency, and life are not satisfactory. The application and promotion of products are limited by the sterilization and disinfection effect, which is not intuitive, and the replacement of existing low-pressure mercury lamp products is also limited by the technological development stage. It is not easy to popularize them.
Li Jinmin pointed out that deep UV LEDs still face many challenges from core materials to device technology at the technical level, and technological breakthroughs and advancements are the foundation of market development.
Wu Ling believes that what is urgently needed to complete is the lack of standards. Existing UV standards are based on traditional mercury lamps. UV LED light sources urgently need a series of standards from testing to application.
"In order to fill the blank field of standardization, the Alliance Standardization Committee took advantage of the rapid response of the group standards to market demand, conducted surveys on measurement, standards, testing, etc., actively deployed the standardization system, prepared the" UV LED Standardization System Report ", and launched "UV LED Technology and Application Terms and Definitions" and "UV LED Sterilization and Disinfection Technology Report" will gradually build a standardized system that matches the UV LED market demand in the future.
